Chanrony Point and the Cromerty Firth are among the best spots in the UK to see bottle nose dolphins. Sports lovers can enjoy canoe trips down the Kyle of Sutherland, fishing, watersports and much more. Ardgay lies on the Dornoch Firth, close to where it becomes the Kyle of Sutherland. Ardgay owes its existence to the 3rd Duke of Sutherland whose estates were so extensive when the railway was built from Inverness in the early 1860’s that he had some control over the route. Ardgay lies at the entrance to Strathcarron, the valley of the River Carron that extends far into the mountainous area to the south west. Some walkers hike from the Kyle of Sutherland in the east to Loch Broom in the west, crossing Scotland in a day.
The cute fishing village of Ullapool is very popular. In this area you can enjoy a variety of fabulous walks in the mountains, along the rock coast and following inland footpaths with an excellent selection of fine summits. Stornoway and Lewis in the Outer Hebrides are a ferry ride away. Ullapool and its surrounding area has been described as an outdoor paradise with a ‘Scandinavian twinkle in winter and Canadian-style adrenaline in summer’ and voted as one of the top ten outdoor destinations by Outdoor Fitness magazine. The Inverpolly National Nature Reserve, just like the Alladale Wilderness Reserve, is home to a wonderful array of wildlife including pine martens, wildcats, buzzards and golden eagles.
Dornoch is just under an hour away with its stunning cathedral where services were held as early as 1239, its breathtaking sandy beach, its Royal Dornoch Golf course and its wonderful shops, restaurants and bars. The links golf course has been played on since the 16th century. You might like to take a look in The Carnegie Whisky Cellars while you are there at its unique range of malt whiskies from all over Scotland. On the way there or on the way back, you may like to stop at the Whisky Distillery at Glenmorangie or at the famous ANTA Pottery and Tain Pottery studios.
Horse lovers can visit the family run Hollingwells Equestrian Centre near Edderton. You can enjoy excellent equestrian tuition or day long treks through stunning landscapes.
If you enjoy boat trips and looking for dolphins, there are plenty of opportunies. You can take a memorable day trip to see these beautiful animals from Chanrony Point or the Cromarty Firth on the Black Isle. You can take a wonderful stroll on pretty Rosemarkie Bay, enjoying a coffee at the local beach cafe before taking out your binoculars to spot the majestic animals. Another popular trip is to Lairg, a fifty minute drive from the cottage to the small, family run Go Wild Highlands where you can take canoe trips down the Kyle of Sutherland. A day trip to Aviemore offers the thrills of white water rafting, skiing, quad biking, an aerial adventure course and various watersports. As well as Royal Dornoch, other spectacular golf courses within easy reach are Castle Stewart and Fortrose and Rosemarkie. If you take a trip to Loch Ness you will enjoy a boat cruise, stopping at the ruins of Urquhart Castle. The Black Isle is also beautiful with plenty of quaint seaside villages, smoked fish shops, craft shops and cute cafes as well as its own Black Isle Brewery where you can stop and taste the beer.

The charming village of St Mawgan is situated four miles north of Newquay and 2 miles east of Mawgan Porth Beach. The St Mawgan Church is very pretty and thirteenth century. Nestled in the wooded Lanherne Valley, the River Menalhyl runs through the village. The village pub serves delicious food and is very handy as you can walk there from the cottage. The Japanese Garden combines the beauty of nature with artistic refinement using shaping and styling of plants and natural elements. It is stunning and very tranquil.
For an incredible, one-off, experience you can take a personal flight experience from Newquay Cornwall Airport which is very close to the cottage. Flyngy Pilot Training gives you the opportunity to see Cornwall from a different perspective. You will enjoy its unique coastlines, cliffs and beaches as well as its rural villages and towns. Depending on the duration of your flight, you could see Newquay, St Ives, Boscastle, Falmouth, Truro, Bodmin, Padstow, St Austell and even the Eden Project. When you are not taking photos, your pilot will hand you the controls of your two seater Cessna 152, three seater Robin DR400 or four seater Piper PA28. Of course you will have a full flight briefing. What an experience!
Mawgan Porth has a lovely sandy beach in a cove with a little stream running though which is great for the little ones. At low tide you can walk out to see the cliffs and rocks and enjoy all that fresh sea air. There are a number of cosy cafes and pubs across the road to enjoy as well as a wonderful art gallery.
If you have had enough of chilling in the garden or on Mawgan Porth Beach, you may want to head to the buzzy seaside resort of Newquay. It has been voted ‘One of the Nation’s Favourite Seaside Towns’ in the prestigious Which Holiday Survey and won Gold for ‘Best Seaside Towns for Families 2019’ by Days Out with the Kids. The beaches and surf are renowned and the tourist entertainment is phenomenal. It is home to some of the world’s best watersports competitions with the Boardmasters Festival and surfing championships held in the resort. There are some wonderful spas in Newquay for relaxation, not to mention the fantastic restaurants to choose from. Children will be happy with Newquay Zoo, Lappa Valley, Pirate’s Quest, Oasis Fun Pools and the Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre amongst plenty of other attractions.
Not far from St Mawgan Cottage you can discover the delights of the very popular Padstow. Padstow is a charming working fishing port surrounded by glorious sandy beaches at the head of the Camel River. It is very much a foodie destination with Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant a popular choice. It is the start and end of the Camel Cycle Trail and a good base for watersports. Across the water is the wonderful town of Rock.

Three small steps lead into the open-plan kitchen/diner, which is fully equipped with dishwasher, microwave, oven, electric hob, and fridge-freezer. Another beautifully spacious room, the kitchen/diner is decorated in the same natural palette as the living room, with touches of powder and cornflower blue. The large chunky dining table seats 4, and there is plenty of counter-top surface area for food preparation.
Upstairs to the first floor and the contemporary style continues into the bedroom. The white exposed beams of the slanted ceilings, stunning skylights, and natural wood walls are offset by the deep soft grey carpet and high-end linens on the super king sized bed. The floating style bedside furniture, and wall-mounted lighting give this room a thoroughly modern take on the country cottage aesthetic.
The bathroom features clean and modern décor with pale stone coloured tiles and a heated towel rail, and features a bath with overhead dual rainfall shower.

The former market town of Wadebridge boasts many independent cafes, bars, and shops and makes a great base for exploring many other areas of Cornwall. You are just a stones throw away from Polzeath – prized by locals as one of the best surfing beaches in the area – and perfect for rock pooling and enjoying picturesque coastal walks. The village of Rock is also just a short journey away, and from here you can catch the regular ferry service across the estuary to Padstow’s fishing harbour, which offers a plethora of galleries and eateries including Rick Stein’s famous Seafood Restaurant.
If you decide not to venture from Wadebridge itself you won’t be short of things to experience. The town is located on the Camel Estuary, making it a prime location for water sports such as canoeing, water-skiing, and sailing. Wadebridge is also home to several events throughout the year including June’s beer festival, the Royal Cornwall Show, and the famous Wadebridge Folk Festival.
Cairngorms Cottage is a beautifully finished cottage located on the sensational Cairngorms Castle Estate. Cairngorms Castle and the Estate have a fascinating history. The first map showing a building on the site was published between 1747 and 1755. The origins of the estate appear to have been Cairngorms Cottage which was built as a hunting lodge and inhabited by the Shaw family from the late 1700’s. Cairngorms Castle was built in the early 1860’s, commissioned by Lord Clyde, Queen Victoria’s banker and designed by Her Majesty’s architect from Balmoral. The estate sold in 1867 at a traditional ‘Roup’ for a reduced price of £10,000 as advertised in the Times! Guests staying on any of the properties on the 200 acre estate enjoy beautiful scenery and the freshest of air on this dreamy estate. You can fish for rainbow and brown trout or take a trip out on the estate’s private loch in the five person dinghy or fish for salmon or stroll along the River Shee which runs through the estate. Skiers and snowboarders enjoy the close proximity of the famous Glenshee Snowsports Centre ten miles away and walkers love the sensational 64 mile CateranTrail, the second stage of which passes through the estate. You can take a beautiful moorland route to the Tail’s highest point between Strathardle and Glenshee enjoying breathtaking views of the lush glens and rugged peaks. Cairngorms Castle is also a wonderful base for exploring the Cairngorms National Park with its choice of 55 Munros, four of which are the highest mountains in the UK. Those less active can enjoy the very scenic, spectacular drive along the 90 mile Snowroads stretch, starting at nearby Blairgowrie and driving to the Highland town of Grantown-on-Spey.

Cairngorms Cottage enjoys three bedrooms, two of which are located on the ground floor along with the living space. The master boasts a zip and link bed which can be set up as twins if you do not want it as a super king-size bed. The other room is a sweet single though it does have a foldaway bed which can be used for an extra guest. All beds in this delightful cottage are beautifully adorned with luxury linens and lovely soft furnishings. The ground floor bedrooms share a modern shower room with a walk-in shower. Upstairs you will find a characterful twin bedroom in the eaves with its own en-suite shower room. It is a delightful room, ideal for two children.

The fabulous Cairngorms Cottage is located on the Cairngorms Castle Estate in the heart of Glenshee, a spectacular, lush green glen. It enjoys the most breathtaking mountain scenery and very fresh air. The Estate is situated on the southern fringe of the Cairngorms National Park, just 2 hours from Edinburgh and Glasgow. Glenshee translates as ‘The Valley of Peace’ and is known fondly by the the locals as ‘the fairy glen’. The area is famous for its fantastic variety of activities including walking, angling, shooting, golf, cycling and also winter sports. Mountain biking, falconry and pony trekking are also available. The fantastic Glenshee Snowsports Centre is just ten miles from the cottage. If that is not enough to get the adrenaline flowing, Nae Limits offer an impressive range of water and land adventures including white water rafting, river tubing and quad biking.
The scenery is absolutely spectacular. The 64 mile Caterlan Trail passes through the estate and takes you to the highest point of the trail with sensational panoramic views of the mountain peaks and deep green glens. The Cairngorms National Park offers scenic drives and 55 Munroes to climb. They are ideal for beginners and experienced hill walkers alike. Kayakers and canoeists enjoy the challenging network of rivers. Instructor led beginner sessions can be arranged.
Golfers are not left out. There are over 100 fantastic courses including Braemar, the highest course in Scotland and possibly the most beautiful. The Cairngorm Mountains rise up each side of the course. The championship courses at Rosemount and Blairgowrie and the world famous Gleneagles, St Andrews and Caroustie are all within easy reach.
The Cairngorms Castle Estate enjoys a fishing stretch of just under a mile with excellent salmon and trout fishing for novice and experienced fishers on the River Shee. The Shee Water is located at the head of the River Ericht tributary of the whole Tay system and has had a consistently strong run for 40 years. The Ericht has a fish counter on it which regularly sees 10,000 to 15,000 fish through in a season which usually runs from May to August. There is also rainbow and brown trout fishing in the estate’s private loch with the estate’s dinghy available for guests to enjoy.
Another popular excursion is a trip to a distillery. Gin lovers adore the Persie Gin Distillery which is just six miles from the castle. Chocoholics can treat themselves at the award-winning Chocolatier Iain Burnett’s gift shop.
The nearby towns of Blairgowrie and Pitlochry are very attractive. They are an easy drive and offer excellent amenities and plenty of attractions, including the Fish Ladder and Festival Theatre in Pitlochry.

Huge skies, glistening beaches and wild flower-strewn clifftops are rightfully the lasting images of Cornwall, and its warm climate, amazing scenery, and diverse Celtic heritage, including the arts and its enormous wealth of archaeology, certainly justifies the fierce pride of its people.
Famous for its water-sports, in particular surfing and sailing, Cornwall also offers an incredible rock-climbing scene, off-road cycling (including the 18 mile ‘Camel Trail’ following the scenic estuary of the river Camel) and of course, walking. The South West Coast Path, which runs for hundreds of miles along the West Country southern coastline, is particularly scenic around Penwith and the Lizard in the far south-west, venturing through vibrant towns, remote cliffs, beaches, farms and fishing villages. Though the magic of the county really happens in the rural Cornish landscape, there are many enchanting towns in Cornwall. Some famous ones include: Bude with its excellent beaches, first class surfing and laidback, relaxed vibe on the north coast; Newquay, the surfing capital of the UK, and; St Ives, the home of one branch of the Tate Gallery, with white sand beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters.
If you must visit a city (for a little retail therapy, or perhaps to see a show) the only one in the county is Truro, with High Tea at Charlotte's offering an unmissable experience, in a charming Victorian building serving Cornish-grown tea! There are two covered markets, one of which sells eco/organic products, and on Saturday mornings there’s a great farmers' market on the piazza where you can find local produce.
To get in, there are ever-improving roads and trains running right through to Penzance in the far south-west of the county, as well as Cornwall Airport Newquay (NQY) about 5 miles from Newquay, or a 30-40-minute drive from Truro. The nearby airports of Exeter (EXT) and Bristol (BRS) offer a wider range of flights than Newquay and will usually be significantly cheaper. Car hire is available at all three airports.

This secluded, extra-comfortable and carefully maintained self-catering chalet — a perfect refuge in summer and winter alike — is hidden away in a corner of one of Cornwall’s most unspoiled and beautiful areas, the Roseland Peninsula, bordered on one side by the famous sailing waters of the Carrick Roads, on the other by the English Channel. Set amongst lawns and trees at the very narrowest point of the peninsula, with views over woods and farmland, the chalet is 350 metres from the wonderful sandy Towan beach on one side, and 100 metres from the picture-book winding creek of Froe and its tidal estuary on the other. It offers perfect peace — but also proximity to a unique range of attractions, including the Eden Project with it's spectacular biodomes, the Falmouth Maritime Museum, the Tate at St. Ives and numerous famous gardens. There are some excellent country inns in the vicinity — and a superb 7-day shop in Portscatho, just over a mile away, selling pretty well everything you might need.
The Roseland Peninsula: The Roseland is one of Cornwall’s most special places, a motley of sea- and river-scapes, woods and fields, lanes and churches, pretty beaches. Besides offering infinite scope both for gentle lazing and for vigorous pursuits on land or sea, the Roseland also gives easy access to other areas of Cornwall.
The Chalet: The chalet has been well equipped to offer optimum comfort and convenience in all seasons, with its sunset dining verandah, south facing dining patio, triple-aspect living/dining room, fall-asleep sofa, ubiquitous radiators, well-equipped kitchen with garden views, two bathrooms (one en-suite), and a general air of calm seclusion. The chalet is only a ten minute walk down a track from the lovely Towan beach, without having to cross any roads.
Due to this property's remote location, it is approached by a track of about 350 metres. We have an ordinary family Car and have no problems, but if you do have a low slung vehicle with very little ground clearance then Towan Beach chalet is probably not for you. Car parking is provided at the top of this track.
Besides yourself and your belongings you need only bring kitchen/bathroom consumables, and your own bed linen and towels.

In season there is a Weber charcoal barbecue unit which is situated beside the front patio.

Provisions etc.: For provisions, the village of Portscatho (1+ miles) offers an excellent papers-to-popadoms, wine-to-widgets 7-day store. The picturesque resort of St Mawes with its medieval castle and sailing/fishing fleet is 7 miles away, while the towns of Falmouth and Truro are both 14 miles via the ancient chainlink river-crossing, the King Harry Ferry. These latter towns both offer the normal panoply of banks, supermarkets, chain stores etc.
